I am free!

I know I generally write about the happenings of what I am doing in Austria, but tonight I would like to share what I am learning.  God has been teaching me quite a bit and trying to narrow it down to one theme is quite difficult.  Yet, He has been teaching me something over and over again and it is simply, Jesus.

This past year I have been working through the Old Testament.  This was something I had never done before besides reading stories in the Pentateuch.  It's easy to read the New Testament and seems more applicable to my life today.  The past 12 weeks I've been studying the book of Isaiah and learning how much Jesus is written and spoken about.  The promise of the King, the hope of a Savior and covenant with a chosen and rebellious people are all woven throughout this book and many others.  The whole bible is all about Jesus!  Since Eve ate that forbidden fruit, Jesus had to come and save us from our sins.  For some reason, this realization has made Jesus so real to me.  I study the bible differently, pray differently, sing hymns with new meaning and even feel like a new Christian.  I feel free!

While this new found truth was liberating, that doesn't mean life gets easier.  This past month has been quite challenging.  I am over committed, tired, doubtful, drained and homesick.  The attacks of Satan have been quite evident at our school lately and I am weak against his schemes.  In this weakness I doubt God, retreat from friends and just don't feel like being a Christian.  This is where love does not become a feeling but a constant and willing choice to pursue God and be obedient to Him.  God asks for obedience every single day.  My new challenge and prayer request is to be obedient to Jesus even when I do not know the reason.  I am so thankful that we serve a God who was willing to come, die and live again with us!

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.  Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.
Isaiah 26:3-4

This song, Knowing You, has been an encouragement and hope you think so too!

Coffehaus/Bruno Mars

Last night the students had a Valentine's event where anyone could enjoy some ice cream, coffee, or sing a love song.  It was fun singing along to all the famous love ballads and watching the students sing some of there favorite love songs.  They were quite good.

What I love about this school is how these students love Jesus.  After about 2 hours of singing love songs, they started singing worship songs and the night turned into a Worship night for Jesus Christ.  They inspire me so much to be continually praising, trusting and obeying Jesus.

King of Hearts

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!  I love Valentine's Day.  I love dressing up in red or pink and writing love notes to all my friends and family.  Valentine's Day in a High/Middle School is quite fun also.  I always have my classes write Spanish Valentine's Day cards and deliver them to their loved ones.  I make them listen to sappy Spanish love songs and tell each other how much they love each other.  I get a lot of rolled eyes to say the least.

This year our Middle School principal came up with a great idea for our middle schoolers on Valentine's Day.  She made all the middle school girls wear paper hearts around their necks with their names on them.  They were not allowed to talk to any boys and if they did they would need to give them their hearts.  The boy with the most hearts at the end of the day was titled King of Hearts and won a prize.  The boys were hard at work trying to get the girls to talk to them.  It was quite cute.  One boy even bought a dozen roses to give to girls in exchange for their heart!  Although it was a fun game, we were hoping for the girls to learn the deeper lesson at a young age.  =)

Isaiah 43:1-4

But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.  Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you,I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.

Good Weather Forecast and Skrypt

Last year a fellow co-worker at my school started a ministry called Rennbahn 924.   This ministry is specifically designed to reach the youth of Vienna through talented musicians who share their passion for music and Jesus Christ.  About every two months there are shows throughout Vienna bringing in youth from all over the city.  It's such a creative, fun and powerful way to share the Gospel whilst listening to some great music.  In addition, one of our students has written some music (hip-hop/Gospel rap) about his story and relationship with Jesus and performed last night!

Some of my friends and I decided to go with some students and support our fellow staff member and students.  It was such a fun night and another creative way to worship Jesus!

The sun will come out tomorrow!

This past weekend our precious middle school did the cutest musical to Annie Jr.  A lot of my students performed in the musical which was so much fun to see them outside of the classroom shining under the bright lights.  They were incredibly nervous and took the play very seriously.  I was so proud of them.

It brought back many memories of performing in the Sound of Music in middle school.  This is where Becca, my current roommate, and I had first met.  I secretly wish I could act and sing but unfortunately God did not bless me with those talents.  I am hoping that when I reach heaven part of my new heavenly body will be a heavenly voice :).  One can dream!

Why teaching English is SO much fun! :)

Recently I've been looking at various resources, articles and blogs to get some ideas for teaching English.  I found this little article on just how easy teaching English can be and I thought I'd share it with you.  At times I forget just how challenging this language is!

So, you think English is easy?

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce.
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.
5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to
present the present.
8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let’s face it, English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant,
nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English
muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France .
Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find
that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig
is neither from Guinea nor is is a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t
groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t
the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese?
One index, 2 indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but
not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all
but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats
vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the
English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally
insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a
recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and
feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and
a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a
language in which your house can burn up as it burns down; you fill in a
form by filling it out; an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the
creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.
That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the
lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. – Why doesn’t ‘Buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’ ?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this:

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other
two-letter word, and that is ‘UP’

It’s easy to understand UP meaning toward the sky or at the top of the
list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?
Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it
UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
We call UP our friends.
And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the
leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.
We lock UP the house, and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and
think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.
We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the
dictionary.
In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can
add UP to about thirty definitions.
If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP
is used.
It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may
wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.
When the sun comes out we say it is clearingUP.
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When it doesn’t rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP,
for now my time is UP,
so……..it is time to shut UP!
Now it’s UP to you to decide what to do with this

Hope you enjoyed!  I'm sure glad English is my first language!

Christmas in Chicago

Happy New Year!  This holiday season was quite splendid.  I was able to go home and spend the holidays with my family this year.  It was such a refreshing time spent with family, friends, and food :).  After spending five months in Vienna and then returning home for two weeks, I realized very quickly how important relationships are to me.  Seeing my family and so many close friends allowed me to realize how blessed I am.  I felt so encouraged and enriched by all the conversations, laughs and times spent together.  When returning yesterday to Vienna, it was quite difficult to leave.  Probably much harder than when I first left.

So thank you once again to all my family, friends and supporters.  I hope you know how much you mean to me and I cannot wait to spend the summer with all of you again.

PS... there is always room for visitors here in Austria too!  :)
